Sleep apnea is a sleep-related breathing disorder characterized by repetitive pauses in breathing, shallow breathing, or collapse of the upper airway during sleep. These pauses can last for a few seconds to a few minutes and occur many times a night. There are three types of sleep apnea: central sleep apnea, obstructive sleep apnea, and complex sleep apnea. Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is the most common type, characterized by repeated episodes of upper airway obstruction during sleep. Central sleep apnea (CSA) is due to an instability in the body's feedback mechanisms controlling respiration.
