  1. In most situations, puncturevine is best controlled by hand removal or by hoeing to cut the plant off at its taproot. Monitoring the area and removing the weed throughout the late spring and into the summer will greatly reduce the impact of the weed the next year.

Puncturevine can be hand-pulled or controlled by hoeing or digging up, ideally prior to seed formation in the spring. If plants have already produced seeds, make sure to remove all possible spiny burrs from the ground. Make sure to wear gloves when removing puncturevine and be careful of the sharp spines.

Small populations of puncturevine can be controlled by hand pulling or hoeing before or during flowering. Pulling works best in moist soil. Hoeing works well because each plant has a single tap root which can be severed. Once the burs begin to develop, you will definitely need heavy gloves for hand pulling.

Long-term control of puncturevine can be achieved by reducing the amount of seeds in the soil. This is best accomplished by removing plants before they produce seeds (i.e., before or at flowering) and continuing to do so over several years.

The best way to attain puncturevine control in lawns is to keep your lawn green and lush, as a healthy stand of grass will choke out the weeds. Feed and water your lawn as usual, but keep in mind that watering will encourage puncturevine to sprout like crazy.
