In an effort to reduce the number of freeloading viewers (and increase their profits), Netflix is planning a new policy for shared accounts. In early 2023, the streaming platform will begin charging accounts for password sharing. The new system will tack on fees for “extra member” subaccounts if someone outside of the household uses the account.

What are the new rules? Netflix will only let people share an account if they live in the same household — or pay an extra fee. It'll ask people using someone else's account to get a new account of their own or stay on as a paid "extra member".

A press release on the official U.S. Netflix site posted on May 23, 2023 said that an email would go out to all subscribers who share accounts across multiple households regarding password sharing — and that it would basically require people who do that to pay more or stop sharing accounts all together.

The streaming service has become serious about stopping its subscribers from sharing their passwords with family, friends and ex-boyfriends you forgot were still using your log-in. The new policy, which took effect May 23, is designed to prevent sharing passwords with anyone outside of a designated "household" − unless you want to pay extra.
