A heap is a specialized tree-based data structure that satisfies the heap property. In a heap, the value of each node is compared to the values of its children in a specific way. There are two main types of heaps:
Max-Heap: The value of each node is greater than or equal to the values of its children, ensuring that the root node contains the maximum value. As you move down the tree, the values decrease1.
Min-Heap: The value of each node is less than or equal to the values of its children, ensuring that the root node contains the minimum value. As you move down the tree, the values increase1.
Heap Operations
Insert
To insert a new element into a heap, add it at the end of the tree (last node from left to right) and then heapify the tree to maintain the heap property2.
Extract Max/Min
To extract the maximum or minimum element from a heap, remove the root node and replace it with the last element in the tree. Then, heapify the tree to restore the heap property2.
