Bezirk Mitte or Mitte von Berlin is the most central borough of Berlin (Bezirk is German for borough, Mitte is German for centre). Most of Berlin's historic centre is in Bezirk Mitte.

Das Substantiv Bezirk entstand in dieser Form im 15. Jahrhundert. Zuvor existierten seit dem 8. Jahrhundert das althochdeutsche kirc/zirc und das mittelhochdeutsche zirc, zirk, zirke ‚ Umfang, Umkreis ‘. Diese sind aus dem lateinischen circus ‎ ‚ Kreis ‘ entlehnt.

Substantial parts of present-day Berlin extend onto the low plateaus on both sides of the Spree Valley. Large parts of the boroughs Reinickendorf and Pankow lie on the Barnim Plateau, while most of the boroughs of Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf, Steglitz-Zehlendorf, Tempelhof-Schöneberg, and Neukölln lie on the Teltow Plateau.
